Antique Cars
Antique cars were the first mass produced vehicles with gasoline engines, immortalized by Henry Ford's model T. They were at the front position of quality control, standardized parts, and the industry itself.Steam power proved too burdensome and electric motors were limited by battery technology. But gasoline was cheap and plentiful, encouraging the further development.
The early cars were built in back yards and barns, with more wood than steel. There were no guarantees or repair facilities and car owners were left alone in keeping their cars driving. The cars were a considerable investment and only the wealthy people could afford it, but the cars were far from luxurious. To start an engine one had to use a crank that often kicked back and could easily break your arm. It required two strong arms to turn the steering wheel. There were no doors, or heaters or windshield wipers. And when headlights finally appeared they had to be lit with a match. Besides, the lack of roads combined with unsophisticated tire technology led to frequent flats.
However, it was an exciting time for inventors and industrialists and names like Ford, Daimler, Chrysler, DeSoto, Dodge, Studebaker, Olds and Hudson became world famous.
