Car Types

In this article we’ll tell you about different types of cars, and try to point out their main pros and cons.

Let’s start with 4-Door Sedans. The enclosed trunk offers security, while the rear doors allow easy entry for rear-seat passengers. Next come 2-Door Coupes that are mostly preferred by single adults or childless couples. Many of coupes have a hatchback instead of a trunk, to allow large items to be carried for short distances. The rear seats are difficult to access, as the front doors must be used for the purpose.

Active families often choose minivans, sport utility vehicles, or station wagons. Station wagons offer more stability, better gas mileage, lower insurance rates, and SUV-sized interiors. Minivans are the perfect choice for those frequently carting kids or cargo. Many of the latest models offer an additional door on the driver’s side. Sport Utility Vehicles or SUVs are designed for off-road usage, but the majority of them never leave the road.

Then we have convertibles, most of them are sports cars, meaning two seats, high-performance engines and superior handling. However, GM, Ford, Mitsubishi, and Chrysler offer a few regular production coupes with four seats and convertible tops. Convertibles are great for driving in the perfect weather's, but their drawbacks are clear.

Sports Cars are designed for performance driving. Most sports cars are rear-wheel drive, have two seats, two doors, and are designed for precise handling, acceleration, and aesthetics.

Pickup Trucks are quite popular among the types of car. The smaller models now offer quad or crew-cab four-door versions, with seating for 5 adults. Full-size models offer extended cabs with smaller third and fourth doors providing access to the rear seats. If you convey large amounts of cargo or need space for more than seven adults, a full-size van is your only choice. They come with and without windows and in payload capacities of over one ton. Extended vans can house to 15 adult passengers.

There are also such special categories as electric cars and solar cars. Electric motors are used to drive vehicles because they can be finely controlled, they deliver power efficiently and they are mechanically very simple. Another advantage is that electric cars lack the vibration and noise pollution of a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine.

Solar cars are light weight, low power vehicles designed only for racing purpose. Solar cars do not present a practical way of transportation; nowadays they are mostly demonstration vehicles and engineering exercises. They have restricted seating (as a rule one, sometimes two people), they have very little load capacity, and they can only be driven during the day.
